When taking notes during the interview, interviewers should have two objectives in mind. First, they should be collecting information that will help rate or score the candidate against the benchmarks. Second, notes are very useful in recalling details that will help to separate the candidates later on. “Separating poor from good is not the issue,” said Blair, “you need notes to separate good from the best.”

“Your notes can be valuable if an unselected candidate challenges the process or if an internal candidate asks for feedback on how he or she can improve,” Blair shared.
