Mark Stein, Senior Vice President at Kaiser Associates, summarized the reasons onboarding programs fail. Although software tools are essential to scale and customize onboarding, relying on software without awareness of best practices, and insufficient management buy-in means the best tool can be underutilized. Change management accompanies any process implementation or re-design. Insufficiently developing an implementation plan and the plan to sustain progress is a common shortcoming. New hires typically make their decision to stay at a company within 9 months. Before this point in time many mistakenly think the onboarding job is done, when this is the critical time to support the new person’s learning to achieve job mastery and begin to understand how their success can lead to a fulfilling career at the company. |
