The “gold standard” onboarding program is not achieved overnight. In a comprehensive onboarding program, over the span of the first year, Parkin Kent from Kaiser Associates, advised making incremental enhancements at first. One example of an incremental enhancement is that the hiring manager makes a phone call to the new person prior to their first day on the job. Gathering feedback from new hires helps to identify enhancements to pilot in a few parts or business units of the enterprise. If a new location needed to hire a lot of talent at once, it would be critical to have an onboarding program that has had the “tires kicked on it first” by piloting aspects in other parts of the company.
