Whether you design e-learning tools and programs, manage e-learning for others, deliver e-learning content or use e-learning to develop professionally, launching and supporting a COP is a new opportunity to collaborate with IT. IT is shifting from supporting large compliance systems to treating COP’s as an internal customer. That means not being a gatekeeper that prevents use of Skype, or limits access to streaming video, and instead supporting different browsers, internet connections, speed and bandwidth, all of which can affect participation in COP’s.

In a webcast poll conducted by the Human Capital Institute, 50% of respondents said their company used one main platform, 20% used a mix and 13% of individuals participating in COP’s chose their own. As the learning community becomes a large internal customer of IT, working through IT-related needs begins a partnership between IT, community facilitators, technology stewards, and training and development.
