The advantage of talent engaged in continuous and applied learning is a business differentiator.

In a pulse webcast poll conducted by the Human Capital Institute, 75% of respondents used learning portals to push info out, 30% supported COP’s, 10% offered access to on-line coaching, 8% offered access to on-line books, and 5% offered developmental networks. Making the entire continuum of e-learning resources available suggests a new role for the training department as technology stewards to facilitate sharing applied learning.

In their organization’s learning strategy, CLO’s can ensure there is support for continuous learning in a variety of modes. People, process, and technology need to work together to nurture and sustain a learning community. Patricia Gongla, program manager with IBM’s Advanced Knowledge Management Solutions team, predicts that as people become more acclimated to working in communities of practice, organizations will learn how to better support communities with robust processes and enabling technology.
