A powerful lens to the e-learning available on any subject is to look for existing COP’s on that topic. Organizations who want to design effective learning for their talent are at an advantage when they begin by asking what COP’s people have already joined.

Using dance as a metaphor, members of COP’s learn how to jump from one technology and COP to another. Some technologies are foundational such as email list, list serve or a blog, others are more specialized discussion and networking groups. Regardless of the specific “dance floor,” the power of most COP’s is that members make themselves available to help each other, identify practices that work better than others, share what they’ve read and done, and offer peer support.
