The contract workforce is vital to the U.S. economy not only in terms of its current and projected size, but also because of the type of work it performs.

Already, more than half of all contract work falls into the professional and highly skilled categories. According to survey respondents, these components are growing as a percentage of the overall contingent workforce.

Regarding the U.S. workforce as a whole, the U.S. Department of Labor projects a 68 percent increase in the use of white-collar contract labor through 2015.
